I want to create a flowchart for a clinical patient design. Inclusion and exclusion criteria: This study recruited 36 patients with sepsis from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University (Harbin, China). All patients were diagnosed with sepsis according to the Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock (Sepsis-3). The inclusion criteria for sepsis patients were as follows: 1) Patients had clear indications of infection; 2) Patients had secondary organ dysfunction or acute exacerbation of primary organ dysfunction; 3) Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score ≥2 points. Exclusion criteria were: 1) Patients receiving insulin treatment on the day of ICU admission (to exclude the effect of insulin on metabolic indicators); 2) Patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) <50%, troponin I >0.02 ng/mL, or existing cardiac-related complications. Healthy controls (n=10) were from a population undergoing physical examinations at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, matched to the sepsis patients' baseline characteristics. All patients were enrolled within 18 hours of ICU admission and signed informed consent forms. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University (KY2025-128) and followed the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. All participants signed informed consent forms. Detailed clinical characteristics and laboratory information are shown in Table GMS1. The analyzed correlation index was the correlation between peripheral blood neutrophil IRGM mRNA content and SOFA score, PCT, IL-6, cTNI, BUN, and LDH.
