Phosphorus is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and a key limiting factor for primary productivity in terrestrial ecosystems. Increasing research indicates that phosphorus limitation in soils is more prevalent than nitrogen limitation on a global scale, particularly in tropical, subtropical, and highly weathered regions (Hou et al., 2020; Du et al., 2020; Zhang et al., 2025). Phosphorus limitation directly reduces growth rates by inhibiting key processes such as microbial nucleic acid synthesis and energy metabolism, thereby weakening soil carbon sequestration potential (Cui et al., 2020). In low-phosphorus environments, microorganisms can employ synergistic physiological strategies such as phospholipid substitution (replacing phosphorus-containing phospholipids with non-phospholipids) and intracellular carbon storage (accumulating carbon-rich compounds) to increase biomass carbon-to-phosphorus ratios. This allows community metabolic demands to approach absolute carbon limitation thresholds, buffering phosphorus limitation fluctuations under a given carbon supply and maintaining microbial growth rates and core ecosystem functions (Mason-Jones et al., 2023; Butler et al., 2023, 2025). Simultaneously, reducing the instantaneous retention of labile phosphorus by microorganisms under low-phosphorus conditions can alleviate phosphorus resource competition between plants and microorganisms (Keane et al., 2023; Jiang et al., 2024). There is an urgent need to clarify the central role of microbial physiological strategies in the stability of low-phosphorus ecosystem functions and to systematically reveal their underlying mechanisms. This will provide new insights for vegetation restoration and agricultural productivity improvement in low-phosphorus soils, optimize phosphorus cycling efficiency, reduce fertilizer application, and promote the realization of eco-friendly resource utilization patterns.

Climate-smart technologies are most transformative when they translate climate signals into actionable field decisions, rather than merely producing data streams, as noted by Ikendi et al. (2025). Decision support for adaptation is a critical interface between science and practice, formalizing uncertainty and aiding producers in choosing among calendar shifts, input timing, and risk-mitigation tactics under non-stationary climate conditions (Ikendi et al., 2025). For rapeseed-inclusive systems, this is especially valuable where decisions are timing-sensitive (establishment, flowering protection, irrigation scheduling, and pest thresholds) and where suboptimal timing converts moderate stress into catastrophic yield loss (Saddique et al., 2025). Remote sensing-enabled monitoring strengthens decision support by revealing within-field heterogeneity in moisture and crop status, enabling targeted adaptation actions.
